Captain Erick

Co-Owner of East End Charters & Bonnie Lynn

Erick grew up in Vermont on Lake Champlain, first as scuba diver, underwater archaeologist and historian.  He spent over 30 years working at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, where he helped create historic replica boats including the 88-foot canal schooner Lois McClure.  He achieved his USCG 100-ton Master's License in 2006 and became a full-time sailor at East End Charters in 2020. Every winter you will find him and Hannah in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, where they offer multi-day charters aboard Bonnie Lynn.

Captain Charlie

Co-Owner of Surprise

Charlie developed a love of spending time on the water at a young age sailing on Buzzards Bay. In addition to sailing, Charlie is an experienced on-water expedition guide in canoes, rafts, and kayaks, and has worked on rivers, lakes, and oceans from the Hudson Bay to the Rio Grande. When he and Sarah settled in Vermont, he channeled his love of boats into starting a wooden boat building and repair business on Lake Champlain and went on to achieve his USCG OUPV, or 6-pack, license. Charlie loves to develop custom sailing trips to share his excitement for getting out on the water. When he's not sailing, you can find him improving and maintaining Surprise.

Captain Hannah

Co-Owner of East End Charters & Bonnie Lynn

Hannah was raised in the mountains of Vermont, and spent many of her adult years working, traveling and studying in Europe and South America. Her background in wilderness adventure education with Kroka Expeditions eventually led to her interest in sailing. She achieved her USCG 100-ton Master's Lisence in 2023. Hannah handles most of the bookings for the summer fleet, so it is likely you will communicate with her leading up to your charter.

First Mate Sarah

Co-Owner of Surprise

Sarah grew up in Iowa, far from the ocean, before attending college in the high desert. From these landlocked beginnings, she went on to develop a love of sailing and traveling by boat. While living in Vermont with Charlie, Sarah learned to sail on Lake Champlain. When the opportunity to take over stewardship of Surprise came she jumped at the chance. An experienced host and event planner, Sarah loves to add all the touches that make a day on the water unforgettable. Whether it's an extra blanket on a windy sail or helping you plan a special surprise, Sarah makes sure that everyone who comes aboard is well taken care of.

The Fleet

Sailing Yacht Surprise
Surprise is a custom-built wooden ketch with stable, easy motion and elegant form.  Designed in 1967 by F. Spaulding Dunbar for a multi-generational family, she was built to be a comfortable and fun yacht for all ages.  There was never another boat built the same, so she is truly one-of-a-kind!

Surprise's bright and spacious interior, large cockpit and copious deck space offer plenty of room to relax, socialize, and enjoy the peacefulness of being on the water.

Her shallow draft (4 feet) allows guests to access secluded beaches and harbors that most yachts this size are not able to.

Surprise has a sturdy swim ladder and hot fresh water shower on deck, providing guests with ease and comfort after taking a dip.

Learn more about Surprise on her website: www.sailingsurprise.com
Bonnie Lynn is a custom, steel-hulled schooner that was designed as a charter and offshore sailing vessel.  She was designed by Merit Walter and Earl Mackenzie, and was launched in 1998.

Bonnie Lynn's traditional rigging and warm interior offer passengers a step back in time.  She holds a USCG Certificate of Inspection that enables her to carry up to 32 passengers for day sails, and 6 guests for overnight charters.  Bonnie Lynn was built to a very high standard of safety, and is equipped with the most modern navigation, communication and safety equipment.

Bonnie Lynn spends her winters in the Caribbean, where
she is available for multi-day sailing vacations: www.bonnielynn.com.
